Throughout the years, I have become increasingly interested in ways to promote healthy eating among kids. Here a few tips that I’ve utilized to get my kids to eat better.

Make Fruit the Star of the Show at Breakfast. My family’s breakfast always revolves around fruit. Sometimes I’ll make all-natural fruit smoothies for my kids to enjoy. Other times we’ll create parfaits with yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit. My kids also enjoy having blueberry or raspberry pancakes, waffles, or muffins. I’ve even been known to broil grapefruit (with a touch of brown sugar) as a unique breakfast alternative. There are lots of fruit recipes sure to satisfy your family.

Highlight Fruits and Veggies All Day Long. Instead of just handing chips to your kids, give them chips and salsa or carrots and ranch dressing. Rather than giving them soda to drink, try Naked juice, Juicy Juice, or homemade lemonade. Instead of just making pepperoni pizza for dinner, add onions, mushrooms, and green peppers. Drinking Soda Equivalent to Drinking Battery Fluid?

Some studies even go as far as insinuating that the consumption of soft drinks is as bad for your teeth as drinking battery fluid would be (don’t test this out though).

Diet soft drinks also contain phosphoric acid, and thus can cause the same amount of enamel erosion as regular soft drinks. An extreme diet soda habit was actually shown to be as bad as a crystal meth or crack cocaine addiction with regards to oral health in a recent case study. In this case study three people’s oral health was compared. All three subjects in the study had maintained poor oral hygiene for years. The first subject had a crystal meth addiction, the second subject had been addicted to cocaine for 18 years and the third one had been drinking an excessive amount of diet soda (about two liters per day) for several years. In the comparison that was done, oral health was determined to be about equally bad among all of them.

While this case study was too limited to provide conclusive evidence on the impact of diet soda on oral health, it definitely provides food for thought.

How to Solve the Soft Drink Problem

Moderation in the consumption of any type of soft drink is advisable and when you do drink soft drinks, you should rinse your mouth with water afterwards or chew sugar-free gum. Using a straw can also help, because it limits the contact of your teeth with the drink.

Try to stop buying soft drinks in the supermarket and start considering them as a treat for when you go out or are on holidays. Once you’ve given up your soft drink habit for a few months you’ll notice that you stop craving these sugar-laden drinks.

Always make sure to keep practicing good oral hygiene and regularly see a dentist, especially if you notice any indications of enamel erosion or other dental health issues.

It has been said, for years, that the secret of old age and good health in Sicily is as a result of their diet. So, what is it that is so damn good for you?

How to Grow Old Healthily

There is an area of Sicily, The Sicilian Mountains, where the prevalence of centurions is twice that of any other area in Europe – 4.32 per 10,000 inhabitants. Although there are numerous reasons why this may be the case – healthy social environment, fresh air, minimal stress etc – it is strongly considered that their diet also plays a huge role.

The beauty of the centurions and pre-centurions in the Sicilian Mountains is that they also live active lives, often free of any serious disease or ailment. Studies have put this down to their diet, just as much as the aforementioned environmental factors. So what is the secret of the Sicilian diet?

Eat Conservatively

In a research conducted with two of the Sicilian Mountains’ centurions, it was discovered that they eat only 1200 calories a day. On top of this, the diet is very simple, with bread, milk, vegetables, legumes, pasta, fresh cheese, a little meat and the occasional fish. They also tend to eat seasonally with regards to both fruit and vegetables, only eating local, organic produce, and compliment their meals with water and the occasional red wine.

This diet is complimented by the oil of locally-grown olives, which is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, polyphenols, coenzyme-Q and vitamin E. These provide terrific antioxidant effects and are said to offer a great defence against disease.

One of the key factors of this low-key, organic diet is the minimal presence of carbohydrates. There is no white bread, only a small amount of pasta, no fizzy drinks or tinned food and no ‘sweet treats’. This helps to limit blood-sugar.
